Web Cams I Have Known & Loved

You may have gathered that I run a couple of webcams. One focuses on the Space Needle from my balconey. Another is the internet's only live Lava Lite webcam. That latter has garnered a lot of attention of late.

I'm especially proud of the DIY homebrew webcam sitting on my balcony. We live in West Seattle (North Admiral to be exact) and have an excellent view of the Space Needle as well as the rest of the Seattle skyline. My first thought was to put up a webcam.

One thing led to another and being a tinkerer and a cheapskate I ended up with an old Thinkpad in a plastic sweater box and a Logitech camera with a cell phone telescopic lens. Quite the hack. Now watch the YouTube video I did about it.

My DIY Webcam

The laptop ran fine in the snow. The issue was the camera fogging up.

I tried wrapping it up in plastic. So-so.

Then I moved to a plastic food tub. Recycling at its best.

Ghettoliciousness!

Eventually I want to put a webcam on my roof, which has a much better view. For that, I'll need a "real" outdoor enclosure with a heater and fan. Ideally I'd like a WiFi webcam to eliminate the need for maintaining another computer. Either that or run ethernet cable to the roof. Think Arduino controlled panning mechanism.
