Software
I'm sure you'll recognize many if not most of the applications listed here. Being a XP kinda guy you won't find any Mac or Linux stuff here. Listed here are utilities, widgets, and one trick ponies many of which do one thing and one thing well.
NoteTab
I love a good text editor. Call me old skool but my text editor is my #1 app, my go-to code. NoteTab Pro understands HTML, does its job, and stays outta my way. Besides, it's Swiss. If you don't use a text editor regularly or think Word is one, ignore what I just said.
WS_FTP
Ya gotta FTP. I use WS_FTP as my file manager I'm so used to the UI. Speaks volumes doesn't it?
TinCam
I like running webcams. There's lots of software out there and they all do pretty much the same thing. TinCam is the one that's fun to use. A fun counts for a lot. AND the author answers his email.
WavePad
I'm no sound engineer (my middle son is) but sometimes I need to record and/or edit sound. WavePad is as sophisticated as my needs and requirements. No more, no less. Works for me.
HashCalc
Why calculate the hash of a file? Storing a hash is far smaller than storing the whole file. If Alice and Bob agree about a file's hash, then they're talking about the same file even if they never see each other's file or have even meet each other. Hashes are random number strings; harvest chunks as needed. Add a time date stamp to a hash and you've got an HMAC. The list goes on.
Waula
Don't trust your hard drive(s), backup your data online. With encryption on an online file storage network. Sign up and get 1GB. Trade your spare hard disk space for more or simply buy additional storage.
Net Stumbler
If yer gonna play with WiFi, you need tools to help you analyze what's going on. Start with Net Stumbler.
WinZIP
WinZip does compression but did you know it does industrial strength encryption too?
PortableApps
Computerless computing on USB drives. When you don't have a machine or you don't want to leave any traces.
TOR and Squid
A network of proxy servers to avoid censorhip & net filtering.
Automatic Anonymous Wifi (PDF)
Need to merge two PDF files into one? mergepdf.net is a free site that does just that. Worth a look and your support.
malariacontrol.net A distributed computing screensaver based on BOINC that models malaria transmission. There's a JetCityOrange team you're invited to join.
This list is far from complete. Please suggest things that should be included. Please write things we all need.
Keep your software up to date. Patches exist because of vulnerabilities. Old software isn't secure. You've been forewarned.
