Price look-up numbers (price look-up codes) are the 4- or 5-digit numbers printed on stickers that attempt to uniquely identify different kinds of produce. They’re supposed identify fruits and vegetables at the cash register but in all honesty there are more types of produce than there are available PLU numbers.
PLU’s are still useful to shoppers. The first digit in a PLU will tell you if about its pedigree. Those that begin with a "9" are organic (good) and those that begin with an "8" are GMO, genetically modified food (bad). Read why PLUs that begin with a 9 are good for you.
Price look-up codes tend to fall between 3000 and 4000. Here's a numerical list of PLU numbers. This is an alphabetical list. The International Federaton for Produce Standars has a great guide to PLU codes too.
