What's Malaria?

Malaria is a vector-borne infectious disease and is widespread in tropical and subtropical regions, including parts of the Americas, Asia, and Africa. There are 350–500 million cases of malaria annually killing 1-3 million people, mostly young children in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Africa@home malariacontrol.netMalaria is caused by Plasmodium falciparum, one of the most common and most deadly of the four malaria parasites. Malaria is transmitted through the bite of an infected Anopheles mosquito usually during the rainy season in certain climates and geographical regions.

Symptoms typically appear within 9 to 14 days after the infected bite and include fever, headache, vomiting, and other flu-like manifestations. If effective drugs are not available for treatment, the infection can rapidly become life-threatening.
