homemade chai tea
Chai is a spiced tea popular in India and other parts of the world. Chai tea is made with black tea, or sometimes green tea, and a mixture of herbs and spices. Chai is served with milk and sweetened with sugar or honey.
I order soy chai more than coffee. I like my chai strong and spicy. After trying different packaged chais, I decided to start making my own. There are lots of different chai recipes available and I’d like to share mine with you.
4 slices fresh ginger, size of a dime
10 green cardommon
6 whole cloves
12 whole black peppercorns
2" piece of cinnamon
1 whole allspice
1/4 tsp whole coriander
1/4 tsp dried orange peel
ground allspice & mace, a sprinkle of eachboil in 4 cups water for 10 minutes
add 4 bags black tea, steep for 5 minutessweeten with honey or sugar, add milk or soy milk to taste
I tend to use 2 parts chai, 1 part milk.
If this recipe is too strong, you can always add water to dilute it. I find the prepackaged chais too sweet.
