Code 39 is a barcode symbology used for identification, iventory, warehousing, shipping, as a part of forms, and in labeling applications. Code 39 is a variable length alphanumeric symbol. The Code 39 character set is: A-Z uppercase, 0-9, and a handful of math punctuation marks. Full ASCII Code 39 bar codes use pairs of characters to represent both uppercase and lowercase text.

One big advantage to using Code 39, sometimes called Code 3 of 9, is that all it requires is a start bar before and a stop bar after the encoded data. The Code 39 start and stop bars are represented by the asterisk (*). Code 39 doesn't use a mandatory check digit. If necessary, a mod 43 check digit can be used.
