RSS Icons & Autodisovery

Use autodiscovery and one or more RSS icons to tell people your website has an RSS feed available. If your website offers an RSS feed or podcast implementing autodisovery will tell visitors they can read your feed too. If you have a feed or podcast you should definitely use an RSS icon along with autodisovery.

What is autodiscovery and how do you use it? To implement autodiscovery for an RSS 2.0 feed put this line in the <head> of your HTML:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/rss+xml" title="your RSS feed title" href="http://www.yourSite.com/feed.xml" />

To implement autodiscovery for an Atom feed put this line in the <head> of your HTML:

<link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title="your Atom feed title" href= "http://www.yourSite.com/feed.xml" />

It also helps to have an RSS icon on your page too.


RSS icons are used when a site offers an RSS feed or podcast. Placed on a page it tells your visitors that you have an podcast or RSS feed available. Avoid using an RSS icon that's so clever or stylized that its meaning is obscured.
