The "Dark Night of the Soul" download link
Danger Mouse, of "The Grey Album" and "Gnarls Barkley" fame, is at it again. Danger Mouse, Peter Lynch, and Mark Linkous, as in Sparklehorse, can't release their next album "Dark Night of the Soul" because of legal disputes with EMI. Again.
His response? To release a blank DVD complete with artwork but no music.
That's right, you find the music online and burn it to disk yourself. Download "Dark Night of the Soul" here. Well, more accurately, it's streamed but I'm sure you're clever enough to save a copy for yourself.
I see this as a template for artist sanctioned piracy. At least that's what a record company lawyer would say.
Music in the digital world, the record companies haven't figured it out yet. And people aren't waiting on them, nor do they need them. At least not like before. Record companies don't own the means of production. Anyone can make music and put it out online. For free. And people do. Record company's nightmare is a manufacturing and distribution without them.
