I can't begin to tell you how powerful chanting "Om mani padme hum" is. It's changed my life beyond my wildest dreams, opening me up, peeling back the layers.
Om mani padme hum, sometimes written "Om mani peme hung", is a powerful mantra within Tibetan Buddhism that evokes Chenrezig, the Bodhisattva of compassion. The Bodhisattva of compassion is also known as Avalokitesvara, Guan Yin (Kuan Yin), Padmapa-ni, and Lokes'vara. The Dalai Lama, the Karmapa, and others are said to be incarnations.
The literal translation of "Om mani padme hum" is Jewel in the Lotus of the Heart or Hail the jewel in the lotus but this doesn't begin to describe the powerful effect this mantra has on clearing negative karma.
Om mani padme hum is the mantras found in Tibetan prayer wheels and is carved on stones found in Tibet. These six syllables are widely used by Tibetans and Tibetan Buddhists alike.
Read what His Holiness the Dalai Lama says about Om mani padme hum. The Foundation for the Preservation of Mahayana Tradition has a piece on it too.
Turning a prayer wheel is like repeating the mantra inside. You can make your hard drive a prayer wheel. Simply download this text file of one million iterations of Om Mani Padme Hum. Then your hard drive will erase negative karma when it spins. Just think how many times your hard drive spins every minute. 5400 times, 7200 times, more?

Lots of folks have tattoos of Om mani padme hum in both Tibetan and English. I'm close to getting one myself.
I may be a bit biased because I love to use this mantra so much. The metal plate pictured here is over our front door much like a mezuzah.
Jerry DesVoignes' Healing Voices CD has a wonderful arrangement of Om Mani Padme Hum. On Amazon try these three: OM Mani Padme Hum (#1), Om mani padme hum
(#2), and Om Mani Padme Hum Mantra
(#3). I like chants, I like ambient, I don't like "New Age" music, therefore these suggestions reflect my tastes.
